Icon fonts were the standard answer to a problem that no longer exists in the same form. Glyphicons is a set of monochromatic vector icons delivered as a web font, published by Glyphicons as a Proprietary product since 2010, and its reach came from a single distribution decision rather than from marketing. The earlier generations of Bootstrap bundled the icon set free with the framework, so an enormous number of sites acquired it without their builders ever visiting the vendor.

When Bootstrap dropped the bundle in a later major version, the icons stopped arriving by default and developers moved to other icon libraries. The consequence for anyone reading detection data is that Glyphicons now works as a date stamp. A page serving those font files is, with few exceptions, a page built on an older front-end stack and never rebuilt since.

As of October 2026 we detect Glyphicons on 35,566 sites, with 9,896 of them resolving to United States and the domains concentrated under .com. A count of that order for a component that stopped being distributed years ago says something plain about the web: front-end code is replaced far more slowly than the conversation around it suggests. Long-lived company sites, portals, documentation, internal tools exposed to the public and countless small business pages simply keep serving what they were built with.

A list of those sites is useful in a way a per-domain check is not. Anyone sizing the long tail of legacy front-end stacks, selling modernisation work, planning browser support for a product aimed at older sites, or studying how long a deprecated dependency survives after its distribution channel closes needs a population rather than a lookup. Checking one domain tells you that one site is old. A full list tells you how large the unmodernised web actually is and where it sits.

Two honest caveats belong with the number. The icon font is easy to copy into a project by hand or inherit inside a template, so detection tells you the assets are being served and not that the site owner has any licence relationship with Glyphicons. Detection also cannot always separate the icons that shipped free with the framework from the paid standalone sets, and a project that has renamed or subsetted the font files will be missed entirely. The figure is best treated as the visible portion of a larger legacy footprint.
