A version control system belongs on developer machines and build servers, not in the document root of a public web server. When a scan turns up git related artefacts on a live site, the usual explanation is that a deployment copied a working repository into the directory the web server publishes to the world. As of October 2026 we record such artefacts on 114 sites. The number is a floor, and a shallow one. Detection depends on files being reachable over plain HTTP, so a server configured to deny requests for dot directories, a CDN rule that blocks them, or a release process that copies built output rather than a working tree will all keep a site off the list while the underlying practice stays identical. The population visible to a crawler is the subset that leaks. What a hit does mean is specific and useful. Repository metadata sitting in a public web root can expose commit history, branch names, author addresses, internal paths and in some configurations the application source itself, including files deleted in later commits that survive in the object store. For a security researcher the domain list is a survey of one well understood misconfiguration across the live web. For anyone studying deployment practice, the same list is evidence about how sites are actually shipped, whether by copying a working directory, pulling on the server, or checking out inside the served path. Version reporting here works differently from anything a hosted product produces. Our record holds 9 distinct version values, with 2.45.2 as the top reported one. A version string that reaches us describes the client that wrote the exposed metadata, not a piece of software the site operator chose to serve, so a spread of values across a set this size mostly reflects the age of each deployment rather than any upgrade policy. The rest of what we record is background rather than signal. There is a GPL v2 licence, a first release year of 2005, and an implementation in C, and none of it varies between the sites in question, because none of the sites are running the tool as a service. The variation that matters is in who leaked and what the leak contains. A per domain check answers one narrow question, whether a site you are already responsible for is exposing repository data. The downloadable set answers what a lookup cannot. How common the exposure is across a segment, whether it clusters by platform, hosting provider or country, and whether one customer base is in better shape than the web around it.
