The system was designed for that world. Its kernel and extension model gave newspapers, universities, ministries and large corporates a way to model complicated content types long before decoupled APIs made the idea routine, and European enterprises adopted it heavily through the following decade. Ownership has moved on since then. Ibexa sells the successor line today, and the modern product shares a lineage with eZ Publish rather than a codebase. Sites still running the legacy platform are running software whose upstream attention has gone elsewhere, even though the GPL v2 licence means anyone with a developer can still patch and ship it themselves. In practice, few do. As of October 2026 we detect eZ Publish on 1,813 sites. A count in that range, for a platform that once ran a substantial share of European corporate publishing, describes a long tail rather than a live market. The surviving installations tend to be stable, rarely redeployed, and maintained by whoever inherited them, which is precisely why they persist. Nobody is choosing this platform now, and nobody is in a hurry to leave it either, until an audit or a hosting migration forces the question. Detection rests on the artefacts the platform leaves in URLs, response headers and template output. A site that has been placed behind an aggressive cache, rewritten its URLs, or moved its front end into a separate application can run the legacy kernel and expose almost nothing, so the figure understates the installed base rather than inflating it. Version attribution is weaker still on a system this old, because the parts that once announced themselves have often been stripped by later hardening. Two audiences ask for this list, and they want opposite things from it. Agencies and integrators selling migration work look for organisations sitting on an end of life CMS before the budget cycle closes, and a domain list is a qualified pipeline in a way that a keyword search never is. Security researchers want a population to measure rather than to sell to, because unmaintained enterprise deployments accumulate known issues that nobody applies fixes for. Neither question survives being asked one domain at a time.
