EthicalAds carries no cross site tracking, no cookie syncing and no behavioural profile. Placement is decided by the page a reader is already looking at, so the network needs the publisher's subject matter rather than the reader's history, and that single design choice explains most of what follows. The publishers willing to take that trade are a recognisable group. Documentation sites, open source project pages, developer tools and technical blogs have an audience advertisers want and a readership that reacts badly to surveillance, so a contextual network is one of the few ways such a site can carry advertising at all. The network grew out of Read the Docs Inc., whose main business is hosting documentation for software projects, and the product still reflects the publishing problem it was written to solve. As of October 2026 we detect EthicalAds on 355 sites. The network is recorded under Read the Docs Inc., dates from 2020, is filed as Advertising, and its serving side is written in Python with a small browser include doing the actual placement.
