What a visitor sees is a link that turned into a video card, a post that rendered as a quote, a bare address that arrived carrying a thumbnail and a headline. The service does the unglamorous work of asking thousands of sources what a link actually contains and handing back something displayable. Which is why finding Embedly on a domain is a statement about editorial workflow rather than about design. A site pays for link unfurling when links arrive faster than humans can format them, and in practice that means a publishing platform, a community with user submitted posts, a comment system, or a knowledge tool where people paste sources all day. Sites that hand craft every embed have no reason to buy the service at all, so the presence of it is a reasonable proxy for content volume that a page count would never reveal. The ownership adds another layer worth reading. Medium acquired the service, which put a piece of shared web plumbing inside a company that also runs a publishing platform of its own, and the licence has remained Proprietary throughout. Anyone tracking consolidation in content tooling cares about which independent sites still route their link previews through infrastructure owned by somebody they compete with. As of October 2026 we detect the service on 3,162 sites. Detection is comparatively solid here, because the integration is a JavaScript loader plus a request to a known host, both of which are visible in a page rather than inferred from behaviour. One caveat runs in a single direction: embeds that appear only on article pages deep inside a site can be missed when the pages we sample happen not to contain one, so the figure leans conservative rather than generous. Released in 2009, the service has had long enough to become invisible infrastructure, and invisible infrastructure is exactly what no per domain lookup will ever let you inventory, because you cannot check for something you never thought to name. The export inverts the problem.
