Every visitor's browser fetches the certificate chain before anything renders, and the issuer is named inside it. Recording DigiCert against a domain means reading a signed fact rather than guessing from a script tag or a header. DigiCert has issued certificates since 2003 and later absorbed the certificate business Symantec had assembled, which is why its issuance spans everything from single domain certificates on small commercial sites to extended validation and code signing for banks and government departments. The product is Proprietary and, more importantly, it is paid. Paid certificates separate a domain from the free automated issuance that now covers most of the public web. Buying means somebody had a reason. An organisation validated certificate that names the legal entity behind the site, a compliance requirement written into a contract, a procurement process that predates automation, or an enterprise agreement covering a large estate of hostnames. Whichever applies, the domain belongs to an organisation with a budget line for security and a person responsible for defending it. As of October 2026 we see DigiCert securing 491,586 sites, with 204,171 in United States and strong representation in .com. American concentration follows from a vendor headquartered there and selling into enterprise IT, but for research the tail matters more, because the markets outside that block are where certificate vendors still compete on price and where switching happens often enough to be worth watching. A limitation should be stated plainly. We record the issuer observed at crawl time, and certificates are short lived by design. A domain can rotate to another authority weeks after we look, and a site behind a CDN frequently presents the CDN's own certificate rather than the one its owner bought, which conceals the purchase completely. What this list describes is issuance visible at the edge, not the contracts underneath it. Even so, the applications are direct. Competing authorities and resellers want the renewal base they can quote against. Compliance and risk teams want to know how much of their supply chain depends on a single issuer, a question that turns urgent every time a large authority has to revoke in bulk. Analysts want the trend line in a segment where free issuance keeps pushing paid vendors upmarket.
