release:** 2013-01-01 A postal operator does not publish code on other companies' websites. CTT is the postal and parcel carrier of Portugal, and its own pages are written in Portuguese for private customers, business customers and the group behind them. What a crawler can fingerprint is the integration a merchant installs so that the carrier appears as a delivery choice at checkout, which is shop software rather than anything the carrier serves itself. Nothing about a parcel moving through the network reaches the outside world on its own. The dependency bends the number in one direction only. A shipping integration announces itself when a storefront renders a delivery option or loads the assets that go with it, so a match is a deliberate installation rather than a coincidence, while shops that keep the carrier configured out of sight of the pages we fetched are simply missing. We record it under Shipping carriers, and as of October 2026 we detect it on 1,361 sites. The number of merchants handing parcels to the carrier is higher than the number of storefronts where the integration is visible. The GPL v2 licensing removes the other way of counting. Freely redistributable code written in PHP has no vendor maintaining a customer list and no billing system counting seats. Directory download totals, where they exist at all, measure downloads rather than deployment, and they cannot be attached to a domain. A crawl produces the one thing those sources never do, which is the address of a real store. What a researcher gets from the domain list is a slice of one national market rather than of the web at large. A store wiring up a domestic postal carrier is saying where its buyers live, that it fulfils orders itself instead of leaving delivery to a marketplace, and that somebody in the business has already made a decision about shipping cost. Available since 2013, the integration has been in that toolkit long enough that finding it often marks an established shop rather than a new one. Competing carriers and courier networks read a list like this as a displacement target, and packaging, fulfilment and logistics software vendors read it as a qualified population of merchants that already ship parcels. For a single site, opening the checkout answers the question in a moment.
