The language dates to 1995, when server-side page generation was a novelty, and it arrived with a tag-based syntax that let a designer put a database query next to markup without learning a separate programming model. Adobe owns the commercial implementation, licensed as Proprietary, while the open-source Lucee engine keeps a parallel ecosystem alive. Longevity of that sort changes what a detection means. New sites are rarely built on CFML today, so a domain that reports it is usually carrying an application that has been in service for a long time and has been maintained rather than replaced. The population therefore skews toward organisations with long procurement cycles and no appetite for rewrites, which in practice means universities, state and municipal government, insurance, and internal business systems that were exposed to the public web at some point and never moved off it. Detection is inferential here, and the caveat is worth stating plainly. Server-side languages do not announce themselves the way a browser widget does. Recognition depends on file extensions surviving in URLs, on session cookie names, on error page fingerprints and on server headers that an administrator can switch off in a configuration file. A well-locked-down install is close to invisible from outside, so our figure undercounts, and it undercounts unevenly, because the security-conscious operators are exactly the ones who strip the evidence.
