Blogger predates most of the software it now shares the web with, it has been operated by Google since the acquisition that followed its independent years, and our record for the platform reaches back to 1999. Very little else in a technology dataset has been continuously in service that long without a rewrite, a rebrand, or a paid tier. Age changes what a detection means. A platform that costs nothing to keep running accumulates sites that nobody has decided to shut down, because there is no invoice arriving to force the decision. So a domain detected on this platform is far more likely to be a long-lived personal or niche publisher than a business making an active technology choice this year. The Blogs label is accurate and slightly misleading at the same time, because the owner is not administering a content management system in any meaningful sense. Google runs everything. That reading has direct commercial consequences. There is nothing to sell these owners in the way of hosting, security, backups, performance tooling, or plugins, because none of those decisions belong to them. What the population is genuinely useful for is different work: outreach and link prospecting across the long tail of independent publishing, sourcing aged domains with real history, academic study of how the non-commercial web persists, and, very often, exclusion. Anyone building a commercial lead list has good reason to strip these domains out in bulk, and doing that requires a list rather than a lookup. As of October 2026 we detect Blogger on 381,462 domains, with 330,804 of them in United States and .com well represented among the suffixes. No version is reported for the platform and none can be, since every blog runs the same centrally deployed code and there is nothing for an owner to pin or fall behind on. The absence of version fragmentation is itself the signal that this is hosted software rather than installed software. One structural caveat matters more than the rest. Blogs published on the platform's own subdomains are a different population from blogs published on custom domains, and a domain-level dataset naturally represents the second far better than the first. The figure here should be read as custom-domain publishing on the platform, not as the total number of blogs in existence. Beyond that, dormancy is invisible to detection.
