Nothing is installed, nothing runs, no server is provisioned. A tag is appended to outbound links, and from that point the site earns a share of whatever those links sell. Amazon has run the programme since 1996, and it stays firmly Proprietary, which is to say the rules, the commission structure and the tracking all belong to the vendor and can change without the publisher's agreement. Presence on a domain says very little about how the site was built and a great deal about how it pays for itself. Detection identifies a business model: content produced to route readers toward a purchase, funded by commission rather than by subscriptions, directly sold advertising or a product of the publisher's own. Editorial consequences follow from the model and show up in the content itself. Reviews, comparisons, buying guides and narrow recommendation sites run heavily through this population, because those formats convert. Anyone studying how commerce shapes publishing has, in a list of this kind, a direct sample of sites whose incentives are known in advance rather than inferred from tone.
