A small site does not need one, because a visitor can read the navigation and find everything, and the search that ships with most publishing platforms stays adequate for a good while after that. A site that has gone out and integrated a hosted search product has passed a threshold: enough pages, enough products or enough documentation that finding things became a real problem worth paying somebody to solve. Addsearch is that kind of component, delivered as JavaScript running in the visitor's browser against a hosted index rather than as software the operator installs and maintains. The delivery model is what makes detection possible, and it also explains what a match proves. A search box rendered on the server leaves nothing behind for a crawler to recognise, while a hosted search widget ships identifiable client code with every page that carries it. The commercial reading of the list needs one qualification, and the licence field carries it. Addsearch is sold as Freemium, so a detected domain is not automatically a paying account. Part of the population sits on a free tier, and separating the two is not something a crawl can do from outside. What a crawl does establish is intent, since somebody chose a third-party search vendor over the platform default and shipped it to production, and that is the qualifying step that matters whether you are looking for accounts to win or a market to size.
